Climate Change: International Work
OralQuestionsSubTopic
Summary
Johanna Baxter (Paisley and Renfrewshire South) (Lab), Chris Vince (Harlow) (Lab/Co-op), and Paul Waugh (Rochdale) (Lab/Co-op) asked the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Miliband, what steps he is taking with his international counterparts to tackle climate change.
In his response, Miliband stated that the government believes climate security can only be ensured by leading globally, as demonstrated by the Prime Minister's message at the United Nations General Assembly. Miliband said the government has put Britain back on the world stage on climate change and that he will be attending the COP29 talks in Azerbaijan to stand up for Britain's interests.
Baxter welcomed Miliband's commitment to putting climate diplomacy at the heart of Cabinet and asked him to explain what he will do to ensure Britain is a main player in tackling the climate emergency. She also requested a meeting to discuss the rewilding work being done in her constituency of Paisley and Renfrewshire South.
Chris Vince welcomed Miliband's warm words on international climate leadership, in contrast to the previous government's failings, and asked if it is only thanks to the new government's commitment to climate change that Britain can lead on the world stage.
Paul Waugh welcomed Miliband's commitment to international obligations and asked him to outline further steps he is taking on the global stage at COP29 and COP30 to increase Britain's global reach on climate.
Munira Wilson (Twickenham) (LD) questioned why the government is considering a third runway at Heathrow, given the Climate Change Committee's advice on limiting airport capacity. Miliband responded that carbon budgets must be taken seriously in the government's plans.
Jim Shannon (Strangford) (DUP) asked Miliband to look into the issue of rewilding on moors and heather, as some experts believe it may not be the most constructive approach.
Tim Farron (Westmorland and Lonsdale) (LD) urged Miliband to ensure the government uses new trade deals to advance the agenda on tackling climate change.
Finally, Joy Morrissey (Beaconsfield) (Con) asked Miliband about the declaration of links between his climate envoy, Rachel Kyte, and certain organizations. Miliband responded that the proper processes were followed and accused the Conservatives of making baseless allegations.
