Speaker's Statement

In a statement to the House of Commons, the minister announced the appointment of Reverend Mark Birch as the new Speaker's Chaplain and Canon of Westminster Abbey. Reverend Birch will formally take up this position on November 7th. The minister provided details about Reverend Birch's background, noting that he has been a minor canon at Westminster Abbey since January 2015. In March 2023, he was made a member of the Royal Victorian Order for his role in organizing the funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth II. Reverend Birch also played a central part in the rehearsals and preparations for the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla. Prior to joining the Abbey, Reverend Birch had a wealth of experience, serving as a chaplain in various settings, including schools, universities, and hospices, as well as a parish priest. The minister expressed confidence that Reverend Birch will be an effective, engaging, and supportive presence for the parliamentary community, and encouraged the whole House to join in welcoming him to his new post.
