Nuclear Power Plant: Wylfa
OralQuestionsSubTopic
Summary
Sir Ashley Fox, the Conservative MP for Bridgwater, asked the Government's policy on the proposed nuclear power plant at Wylfa. In response, Dame Nia Griffith, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Wales, stated that nuclear energy can play an important role in achieving energy security and clean power, while providing thousands of skilled jobs. She explained that Great British Nuclear has acquired the Wylfa site with a view to developing a new nuclear project, and that decisions on the project and the technologies to be deployed will be made in due course.
Sir Ashley Fox followed up, noting that the previous government had announced the biggest expansion in nuclear power for 70 years, including the commissioning of Hinkley Point C in Somerset. He asked the Minister if she agreed that a new nuclear power plant at Wylfa is vital to the UK's energy security, and requested a timeline for its development. Dame Nia Griffith responded that as a previously designated nuclear site that has hosted nuclear power, Wylfa is ideally placed either to be used for large-scale nuclear, or to be used for a series of small modular reactors. She stated that the government will be setting out its plans for the site in due course.
