Rail and Road Connectivity: Northern Lincolnshire
Adjournment Debate
Summary
In the adjournment debate on rail and road connectivity in Northern Lincolnshire, Melanie Onn, the MP for Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes, highlighted the economic importance of the Humber region and the challenges faced by her constituents in accessing the area. She described the poor condition of the A180 road, which she said was causing excessive noise and disruption for drivers, and the unreliable train services, with frequent delays and cancellations, particularly at Doncaster. Onn argued that the lack of efficient transport links was hampering the region's economic growth and making it difficult to attract international businesses and visitors.
In response, the government minister, Lilian Greenwood, acknowledged the concerns raised by Onn and other MPs. Greenwood explained that assessments had been carried out on the noise levels of the A180, and that while they were found to be reasonably loud, they were consistent with the expected levels for a road of that age and volume of traffic. She stated that National Highways had carried out some surface improvements on the road, with more planned, which should help to reduce the noise levels.
Regarding the direct train service from Cleethorpes and Grimsby to London, Greenwood said that the government was working with industry to address the various issues that needed to be resolved before such a service could be introduced. She acknowledged that the previous minister had expressed an ambition for the service, but stressed that this was not the same as a promise, and that a thorough business case process would be required.
Greenwood also addressed the performance issues on the regional rail network, noting the poor punctuality and reliability of services operated by TransPennine Express and Northern. She said that the government was holding the train operators to account and that the upcoming creation of Great British Railways would help to improve services for passengers.
In addition, Greenwood highlighted the government's plans to improve bus services in the region, including through the upcoming better buses Bill, which would give local leaders more tools to deliver better networks. However, she acknowledged the challenging financial situation inherited by the government, which would impact the delivery of promised schemes.
