Middle East Update

Ministeral Statement

Summary

The Foreign Secretary, Mr David Lammy, opened the debate by outlining the Government's position on the Middle East. He stated that the Government's priority in the region is to advance the cause of peace, and that they are working with allies to push for a diplomatic solution to the conflicts in Israel, the West Bank, Lebanon, the Red Sea, and Gaza. The Shadow Foreign Secretary, Mr Andrew Mitchell, responded by condemning the actions of Hamas and expressing the Opposition's support for Israel's right to self-defence. He acknowledged the Government's decision to suspend some arms export licences to Israel, but urged caution in indicating any moral equivalence between Hamas and the democratically elected government of Israel. The debate that followed covered a wide range of topics. Several members expressed their condolences for the loss of life on both sides of the conflict, and called for an immediate ceasefire and the release of hostages. There was discussion of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with members urging the Government to do more to ensure that aid and medical supplies can reach civilians. The issue of arms exports to Israel was a major focus, with some members welcoming the Government's decision to suspend certain licences, while others argued that the measures did not go far enough. There were calls for the Government to consider banning goods produced in illegal Israeli settlements, and to impose sanctions on specific individuals such as Smotrich and Ben Gvir. The debate also touched on the situation in the West Bank, with members expressing concern about the ongoing Israeli military operations and the increase in settler violence. The Government was urged to take stronger action to address these issues and uphold international law. Throughout the debate, members emphasised the importance of achieving a lasting peace in the region through a two-state solution that guarantees the rights and security of both Israelis and Palestinians. The Government was praised for its efforts to engage with international partners and work towards this goal, but also faced calls to be bolder and more proactive in its approach.
