Speaker's Statement

Procedural

Summary

In the House of Commons today, a minister paid tribute to John Tamlyn, the Bar Doorkeeper who is retiring after an incredible 36 years of service. Tamlyn has been a much-loved member of the Doorkeeper team, having joined the House of Commons in 1988 as an attendant to the Sergeant at Arms office before becoming a Doorkeeper for the last 26 years. During his tenure, Tamlyn has led the Speaker's procession into the Chamber hundreds of times, and he is widely respected for his extensive knowledge of Chamber procedures and his role as a reliable source of information for Members. The minister described Tamlyn as one of the smartest dressed Doorkeepers, with a fantastic sense of humor, and an expert on music, particularly 70s disco and 80s pop, who is also known to be a skilled dancer. The minister expressed gratitude for Tamlyn's loyal and lengthy service, and the entire House joined in thanking him for his contributions. The minister wished Tamlyn a very happy retirement, acknowledging his dedicated service to the House of Commons over the past 36 years.
