Aerospace Industry: Northern Ireland
Adjournment Debate
Summary
In the House of Commons Adjournment Debate on the Aerospace Industry in Northern Ireland, Jim Shannon, the MP for Strangford, opened the discussion by highlighting the importance of the aerospace sector to the Northern Irish economy. He noted that Northern Ireland is a global hub for aerospace, with over 120 firms within a one-hour drive of each other, and a highly skilled workforce. Shannon praised the region's academic and vocational training, which has contributed to its success in the industry.
The Minister of State for the Department for Business and Trade, Sarah Jones, responded by assuring the House that the government is committed to supporting the aerospace industry in Northern Ireland and across the UK. She acknowledged the challenges the sector has faced in recent years, including the impact of the pandemic and global supply chain issues. However, Jones emphasized the government's plans to bolster the aerospace industry through its industrial strategy, which aims to grow the UK's share of the global aerospace market, unlock investment opportunities, and create high-skilled, high-paid jobs.
Regarding the specific situation in Northern Ireland, Jones recognized the importance of the Short Brothers facility, which produces the advanced composite wings for the Airbus A220 aircraft. She noted that the government is working closely with the Northern Ireland Executive to ensure the best possible outcome for the facility and its employees following the acquisition of Spirit AeroSystems by Boeing and Airbus. The Minister also highlighted the government's support for research and development in the sector, including a £10 million project led by Short Brothers to develop more sustainable aerostructures.
Several other MPs intervened during the debate, including Sammy Wilson, who praised the significant contribution of the aerospace industry to Northern Ireland's economy, and Gavin Robinson, who encouraged the Minister to consider the Royal United Services Institute's report on defence spending in the region, which he believes presents opportunities for increased support and investment.
