Recognition of Positive Impact

OralQuestionsSubTopic

Summary

Greg Smith, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Mid Buckinghamshire, asked what steps the Church is taking to recognize the positive impact of individual members of the clergy in the communities they serve. In response, Marsha De Cordova, the MP answering on behalf of the Government, explained that at the national level, the contribution of local clergy and lay people is usually recognized through the Archbishops' medals or a Lambeth degree. She added that most dioceses also have their own awards, and that clergy and lay volunteers are eligible for nomination to relevant orders, decorations, and medals, as well as opportunities in the wider civil honours system where appropriate. Greg Smith then expressed his gratitude for the hard work and dedication of all clergy, and highlighted the exceptional service of Reverend Canon David Williams, who will be leading his last service at St Mary's, Princes Risborough, on Christmas day after 15 years of service to the town and surrounding villages. Smith praised Reverend Williams' work, including his support for thousands of children through Lighthouse Princes Risborough and his role as a trustee of the Princes Centre and other charities, including those supporting the homeless. Smith asked the Government what more the Church can do to recognize Reverend Williams' and others' hard work. In response, Marsha De Cordova placed on record her thanks, congratulations, and appreciation for Reverend Canon David Williams and his wife for their dedicated, pioneering, and innovative work in the community. She stated that the Diocese of Oxford is thankful for the great contribution of the clergy to the Church's ministry, mission, and local communities. De Cordova encouraged the MP to pass on her thanks to Reverend Williams and to be present at his final service on Christmas morning to congratulate him in person.
