Economic Growth

OralQuestionsSubTopic

Summary

Torsten Bell (Swansea West) and Claire Hughes (Bangor Aberconwy), both Labour MPs, asked the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Wales, Dame Nia Griffith, about the Government's discussions with Cabinet colleagues on supporting economic growth in Wales. In her response, Dame Nia Griffith stated that the Government's top priority is to kick-start economic growth across the UK, and that Wales can be at the forefront of this mission, with opportunities in renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, the creative sector, fintech, and life sciences. Torsten Bell followed up, expressing concern about the recent redundancies at Swansea University and asking how the UK and Welsh Governments will work together to support these crucial institutions. Dame Nia Griffith acknowledged the challenges facing Welsh universities and said that the Secretary of State and she had met with the Vice-Chancellor of Swansea University to discuss ways of supporting the higher education sector in Wales. Claire Hughes then raised the issue of poor rail performance by Avanti on the north Wales coast, which is affecting passengers and businesses and hampering economic growth in her constituency. Dame Nia Griffith responded that the Secretary of State had met with the Transport Secretary to discuss rail connectivity, including Avanti's performance, and that the Government is holding regular reviews with Avanti and Network Rail to secure better services for her constituents. Carla Lockhart, a DUP MP, then intervened, highlighting the importance of the agrifood sector for economic growth and asking if the Minister agrees that farmers, whether in Wales or Northern Ireland, need the Government's support to reach their full potential. Dame Nia Griffith agreed that farmers make a significant contribution to economic growth and food security, and stated that the Government is determined to work hand in hand with the Welsh Government to offer the best support to Welsh farmers.
