Cross-Government Working
OralQuestionsSubTopic
Summary
Patrick Hurley, the Labour MP for Southport, asked the Minister without Portfolio, Ellie Reeves, what steps the Government is taking with Cabinet colleagues to improve cross-Government working.
In her response, the Minister outlined the Government's commitment to a mission-led approach to governing, which aims to be more joined-up, break down silos, and push power out to communities. She explained that the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster had recently chaired the first mission board on growth, and that further mission boards would be held as the Government approaches the summer recess.
Hurley followed up by acknowledging the Prime Minister's announcement that he would personally chair new mission delivery boards to ensure the implementation of Labour's key manifesto pledges. However, Hurley emphasized the need for effective communication between central Government and devolved bodies to deliver these pledges effectively. He asked the Minister what steps are being taken to ensure that devolved Governments are involved in the new Government's mission delivery process.
The Minister responded by agreeing with Hurley's point and stating that the Government has set out its intention to work closely with the devolved Governments in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, as well as with metro mayors and local council leaders in England, to deliver the missions. She noted that one of the Prime Minister's first actions was to meet with all the First Ministers during his tour of the UK, and that meaningful cooperation will be key to delivering change across the entire United Kingdom.
